Michael Oswald, Horn

Mike OswaldMike has been Second Horn in the Victoria Symphony since 2007. Growing up outside of Cleveland, Ohio was truly a gift for an aspiring horn player. Not only is the Orchestra one of the world’s finest, there are many opportunities for a student to play in fantastic ensembles. Mike performed in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra for two years, which toured Carnegie Hall, and later attended the Cleveland Institute of Music. He studied with former principal horn, Richard King, and had the opportunity to join Rich on stage with the Cleveland Orchestra performing Strauss Don Quixote – an early highlight of his career!

Subsequently, Mike moved to Houston to study at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University with William VerMeulen. Half way through the first year of the Masters program, Mike took the long flight up to Victoria for an audition, and – as they say – the rest is history.

Mike has enjoyed spending summers at music festivals in beautiful places. He has attended the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; the Aspen School of Music for four summers and the National Repertory Orchestra, in Colorado; and the Music Academy of the West, in Santa Barbara, California.

Lately, Mike has stayed put, enjoying the Victoria summers, Symphony Splash – and of course spending quality time with the wife and dog.
